Winter festivals in Ladakh

'

One of the great peculiarities of Tibetan Buddhism is the great number of religious festivals. Each monastery celebrates its own festivals every year. During the festivals, special rituals are conducted, offerings are given to divinities during dance rituals called Chams, which all the villagers attend and enjoy. These dances, which aim to teach the people about Buddha's doctrine and to overcome internal obstacles, last sometimes for a few days. These festivals become occasions for villagers to gather, meet, celebrate and sometimes to court. They wear the most beautiful clothes and jewellery, and relax and have fun.

In Ladakh, the largest part of the religious festivals takes place in the winter which is called the time of festivities. We propose you attend some of the most prestigious ones in Ladakh.

Our program: we visit Leh, a civilization at the crossroads, attend to Buddhist festival in the Indus valley, and walk on one of the most ancient parts of the Caravan Road connecting Kashmir to Tibet.

The short (4 days) and easy (the altitude doesn't go above 4000 m) trek leads us on one of the mythical parts of the Silk Road. We pass through many villages surrounded by majestic snow mountains and visit some monasteries perched on rocky headlands and get immersed in the Ladakhi world thanks to home stays.
