Trekking in Myanmar: the best routes

Myanmar is a country of fascinating landscapes, composed of a geography which lends itself to all types of activities. The reliefs of its hilly and mountainous lands particularly favour an activity popular with many travellers: trekking. Indeed, the possibilities of trekking in Myanmar are numerous and different regions present the ideal conditions to enjoy this type of activity accessible for all types of levels.

Chin State

Chin State is suitable for experienced trekkers in search of discovery and challenge. Treks here are perfect for those who wish to discover the ethnic minorities of the region while enjoying incredible landscapes endemic to this corner of Myanmar.

When trekking in Myanmar’s Chin State travellers cross different villages of the famous Christian ethnic minority group: the Karen and might even have the chance to meet the last women with tattooed faces, a testimony of past values and customs inherent in this ethnic group, represented by fabulous patterns on the faces of women of the tribe.

This trek can be adjusted in different formulas; travellers wishing to increase or decrease the level of difficulty of the experience have the choice of doing this trek over a period ranging from 2 days to 7 days. Travellers are thus led to live a unique experience in Myanmar by staying with locals or in old buildings rich in a historical past.

Shan State

Inle Lake Trek

Inle Lake, today enjoys a reputation justified by its incredible geographical location and its unique character. This mirage taking shape on the plateau of Shan State offers a sumptuous and unique vision to the traveller curious to discover the wonders of this unique country. There are many ways to experience Inle Lake, but it is during a trek that this emblematic region of Myanmar takes shape in other colours and perspectives.

Kalaw Region Trek

One region in particular has the advantage of being able to suit a wide range of trekkers and stands out from the rest because of its accessibility and the route it takes: the Kalaw Region trek.

From the Kalaw station, not far from the Lake region, trekkers are invited to embark on a short journey of either 2 days/1 night or 3 days/2 nights through tea plantations in Shan State. The negative elevation and the gentle slopes make this trek very pleasant and offers plenty of possibilities of discovering spectacular landscapes – one of the best options for beginners trekking in Myanmar.

Trek to meet the Pa Oh ethnic group

Another trek offers the possibility of going to meet one of the famous ethnicities of Inle Lake, the Pa Oh tribe. During your trek, you visit a Pa Oh village and spend some moments discovering and sharing stories with the locals during a traditional ceremony. The immersion is guaranteed to be one of the most authentic experiences you can have while trekking in Myanmar.

Hispaw Trek

There are many options for trekking in Myanmar, and especially in the heights of Shan State where breathtaking views of the mountains and verdant nature delight the heart and soul of any traveller. You take a path that has become famous for its train journey passing through the very impressive Gokteik Viaduct, which will take you to the quiet little village of Hsipaw. Set out to discover authentic and wild side of Myanmar on a well-crafted and flexible itinerary, designed according to your level.

As you can see, Myanmar offers a multitude of attractive trekking possibilities for anyone wishing to venture and discover this multifaceted country. In an original or more classic way, for experienced trekkers or curious beginners, with family or friends, trekking in Myanmar is an activity that will allow you to see another side of this country.

Some practical advice

Depending on the season and the difficulty of the trek, it is always important to be prepared and pack the necessary material.

Good walking shoes or a pair of trainers are a prerequisite for treks. Furthermore, even if everything essential will be provided during your nights with the locals, it is practical and more comfortable to bring a sleeping bag in order to overcome any unexpected back pain. Pack cotton, linen or anti-perspiration clothes, which will help you to withstand the heat during your trek. A fleece or light jacket is also recommended for evenings when the temperature can drop.

When trekking in Myanmar with Shanti Travel, you will not need much since most of the necessities will be provided to you, but it is better to protect yourself from any eventualities by taking the minimum requirements with you.
