Wellness in Sri Lanka

Yoga

In Sri Lanka, lots of people practice yoga daily. While yoga is a relatively new workout trend in many countries, in Sri Lanka it is a traditional practice related to Hinduism and Buddhism, the two main religions in Sri Lanka. Take advantage of your trip to Sri Lanka to learn about this ancient discipline. A typical yoga session usually lasts one to two hours. It always starts with breathing exercises (pranayamas) and then follows a series of postures (asanas). While on holiday to Sri Lanka it is very easy to find a place to practice in most of the hotels in the country; some of them, especially at the seaside, have dedicated yoga shalas and in-house yoga teachers to guide you in your practice. They say yoga can only do you good, so give it a try!

Meditation

Before or after a yoga session, there is usually a meditation session. Meditation helps you to improve your self-control and calm your mind. There are several methods of mediation. One of the oldest is called Vipassana, it is a simple interpretation of the Buddha’s teachings consisting of simply observing your mind. The benefits of meditation on mental and physical health have already been proved, regular practice can cure many sufferings, bring you relaxation and help with your self-esteem. It offers a different way to see the world.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a form of traditional medicine that has been used in India for more than 2500 years. Treatments can last for just a couple of hours or be used in the long-term. Longer treatments aim to restore the balance of the vital elements composing your body. Shorter treatments like a steam bath or massages with essential oils are a good way to relax. All ayurvedic treatments rely on a great knowledge of plants, mineral powders and essential oils. In Sri Lanka, there are more Ayurveda practitioners than “classical” doctors and it is quite easy to plan an Ayurveda retreat where you will be able to spend a couple of days or weeks in a centre where your food and treatments will be decided according to your health needs.
