Walking on the old road of the caravans connecting Kashmir to Tibet, this trip makes us discover the richness of the Indus valley and the distant valleys of Da-Hanu and Sham.
The Indus valley, which offers fabulous landscapes of punctuated vastness and greenery of oasis, constitutes the major axis of Ladakh. The valley is full of all the colors of Ladakhi life and their boudhic and Tibetan culture. The most prestigious monasteries of Ladakh are located in this valley.
Inhabited by Dogpas (or Dart), descendants of an Indo-European tribe of chamanist tradition, the valley of Da-Hanu constitutes a unique world with their specific traditions.
Sham, famous for its architecture, its almonds and its apricots, constitutes the richest area of Ladakh. Altitude, relatively low for Ladakh (on average 3400 m!), makes the inhabitants life easier than in the high pastures of Changtang or the steep sided valleys of Zanskar.
The short and easy 5 days of trekking involves us (not more than 4000m of altitude) on one of the branches of the mythical Silk Road, through a lot of villages, islands of greenery in the middle of a lunar world, perched monasteries on rock headlands, smiling children and fields of barley surrounded by majestic snow-covered mountains. Each evening, we will set up our camp near a village.
