Responsible travel to India

Be a responsible traveller in India. How? We will guide you.

Some tips for responsible travel in India:

  • Learn a few words of Hindi to establish privileged contact with the local populations.
  • Be patient and keep smiling, in this country more than elsewhere there is always a solution.
  • Remember to take a small bag to bring your waste back to the hotel at the end of the day. Garbage cans are rare in India.
  • Water is a scarce resource in many parts of India. Do not wash your towels and sheets every day in hotels.
  • Choose gourds over disposable water bottles (89 billion plastic water bottles are sold worldwide each year. A plastic bottle takes 450 years to disappear from the face of the earth).
  • Do not give to children who beg, when you give money, food, or gifts to children who are begging, or when you buy them goods, you encourage them to continue begging; which prevents them from going to school and traps them in a cycle of poverty.
  • During a trek:
    • Try as much as possible to stay on the main trails to limit the environmental impact to the existing trails.
    • Avoid walking next to the trail or cutting into the bends, new trails will be created such as scars that promote erosion and vegetation will not grow back.
    • Protect your food and waste from animals.
    • Do not pick flowers or plants.
    • Do not throw any waste into nature (this also includes cores, peels, eggshells, etc.).
  • Respect local customs: https://www.shantitravel.com/en/india-travel-guide/understanding-cultural-differences
  • Follow the advice of your India travel expert and participate in activities related to the preservation of traditions.
