As in most countries in Asia, you can find some Asian elephants in Vietnam, which are smaller than their African counterparts. To see these majestic animals in Vietnam , you must go to the highlands in the centre of the country and especially in the region of Buon Ma Thuot. Elephants have an enormous religious and cultural significance in Vietnam – in former days, elephants used to grace the Royal Courts and were revered by the ethnic minorities of Vietnam.
The Indochinese leopard is one of the nine extant subspecies of leopards, characterized by a spotted colour with small rosettes. It lives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, including those in central Vietnam. This magnificent wildcat is becoming increasingly rare, threatened by deforestation and the reduction of its prey.
The Indochinese tiger is undergoing a very worrying decline and is now in the "Critically Endangered" category. They are among the rarest species of animals in Vietnam . Some live in forests along the Vietnamese borders with Cambodia and Laos. Access to these areas is obviously very complicated, and biologists have recently obtained limited permits to carry out field studies.
Monkeys are one of the animals in Vietnam you will surely meet. Among some of the species you will encounter are: macaques, gibbons and more. They are clever and not very shy - be careful, they won't hesitate to steal your meal from your bag by jumping on you, or pulling food out of your hands. They can also be quite intimidating and even aggressive. Pay attention to not approach them and do not tempt them. Avoid giving them food so as not to encourage their dependence on humans. You will find many on the islands in Halong Bay and Cat Ba, in the Mekong Delta and in the forests.
