Volcanoes in Java

Java is a volcanic island in Indonesia. There are dozens of volcanoes there but only 45 are considered to be active. As in other islands of the archipelago, volcanoes are very important in Javanese culture. The volcanic activity also contributed to the fertility of the soil in Java.

The most famous volcanoes in Java are Bromo and Ijen, on the eastern part of the island. If you like hiking, make sure you plan for a stop in the region during your holiday in Indonesia. Whatever hike you will decide to go for, you will have to wake up in the middle of the night but it will be worth it when you will be admiring the sunrise from the summit. Beware temperatures can get low on your way to the top.

Bromo

Bromo volcano was named after Brahma, the god of creation in Hinduism. Lots of local myths and legends mention Mount Bromo. One of them tells the story of a prince who sacrificed himself to save his family. To commemorate this act of bravery, every year during Kasada festivities, Javanese cook and give offerings.

Bromo volcano is active but you can climb it anyway. The best season to do so is from April to October. From the summit you can enjoy stunning view and if you get there for sunrise what you will see will be breath-taking. The highlight of your holiday in Indonesia for sure! If you don’t feel like waking up in the middle of the night and hiking early morning you can still go for sunset.

Ijen

Climbing Ijen volcano is a totally different adventure. You will have to wake up in the middle of the night too but the hike will be much more difficult than on Bromo volcano. It lasts about 3 hours and you will have to wear a face mask to protect you from sulphur fumes. On the way you might meet local workers carrying baskets they will load with blocks of sulphur. Once you’ve reached the summit, in the crater, you can see the largest acid lake in the world. The turquoise water and blue flames rising from the yellow walls are mesmerizing.

Since a documentary made by National Geographic, Ijen volcano has become very popular.
