Before going to Sumatra

It is important to know what to pack before going to Sumatra. To make sure you make the most of your stay in Indonesia here are a few tips from our travel experts.

Visa

Before going to Sumatra, make sure your passport will be valid for at least 6 months after the last day of your holiday in Indonesia. And that’s it! Since 2015 most of European citizens are allowed on Indonesian territory without a visa, you only need a free page on your passport.

Health

There isn’t any mandatory vaccine you must have before going to Sumatra. However, it is highly recommended you get vaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis A and B, polio and typhoid.

During your hike in the jungle or when you climb a volcano we suggest you wear pants and long sleeve shirts to avoid mosquito bites. Sleep under a mosquito net and carry repellent with you during your holiday in Indonesia.

Plugs

Plugs in Sumatra are similar to European ones, voltage is 220V, so it will be very easy to plug your electrical devices during your holiday in Sumatra. However, make sure you pack a torch as power cut often happen in Indonesia and they can last a few minutes… or a few hours.

Money

Since 1949 the official currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian rupee (rupiah). The cost of living in Indonesia is lower than in Europe. No need to bring rupiah with you as exchange rates will be better on the archipelago. before going to Sumatra you can pack euros, US or Canadian dollars, pounds, Swiss franc… But careful there are illegal currency exchange desks. Ask your travel expert or your driver for help to avoid scams. You can exchange money at the airport but exchange rates usually are more attractive in main cities or at the hotel. Wherever you decide to exchange money, always count it before you leave the office.

You can also withdraw money at ATM but don’t forget to inform your bank you will be traveling abroad before going to Sumatra to avoid any issue with your credit card and ask details about fees when using it because ithdrawals are often limited to 100 or 200 euros so you might need to make a few stops during your trip in Indonesia.
