The highlights of Sumatra

There is so much to do in Sumatra it is impossible to get bored. Cultural sites, natural wonders, local traditions to experience… Here is our selection of must-do activities in Sumatra.

Discover Batak culture

Batak people originally lived in Northern Sumatra, they can be divided in 6 ethnicities: Angkola, Dairi -also called Pakpak- Karo, Mandailing, Simalungun, Toba. They all have very strong local cultures especially when it comes to funerals. Batak descend from Tibetan tribes and are good sculptors in wood and stone. To honor their ancestors, they carve stone, build sarcophagi, effigies and magical statutes. Their houses are built without using nails! Learning about the Batak traditions will be a highlight of your stay in Sumatra.

Observe the orang-utans

Gunung Leuser National Park is located in the North of Sumatra, it is one of the only places in the world where it is still possible to observe orang-utans in their natural habitat. Today there are about 5,000 orang-utans in this national park. During the trek you can spot species endemic to Sumatra rainforest. For your safety and to protect the environment it is very important you follow your guide’s instructions: don’t feed animals, keep silent, and don’t come to close. During this must-do activity in Sumatra you will be observing wild animals on their own territory.

Explore Toba Lake region

Located 175 kilometres South of Medan, Lake Toba is one of the most impressive lakes in the world, a must-see in Sumatra. It is the largest volcanic lake in the world: 100 kilometres long and 35 kilometres wide. Tourists from all over the world come to admire this breath-taking landscape and spend time on the lake in Samosir Island.

Meet the Mentawai

The Mentawai live in the forest on Mentawai Archipelago. They hunt and fish. The Mentawai men and women are animists and haven’t changed a thing to their way of life for decades. They are the guardians of the forest, they try to protect it at any cost against globalization. Meeting the Mentawai is a must-do activity in Sumatra, it is a very unique experience and a great chance to explore an isolated area.

Relax on Pulau Weh Island

If you’re looking for a more relaxed holiday and need time to chill on the beach, Pulau Weh is the place for you. North of Sumatra, in the Andaman Sea, you can enjoy uncrowded beaches on the island of Pulau Weh.

Climb Sibayak volcano

Climbing Sibayak volcano is a must-do activity in Sumatra. During the hike, you will hear the volcano rumbling as it is active. You will need about 3 hours to reach the top, from there you can observe the impressive crater, 900 meters wide, and admire a beautiful panorama of Berastagi town.

Taste traditional rending

Rendang is the traditional dish of Sumatra. It is a meat dish, usually beef but it can be chicken, duck or mutton, cooked in coconut milk and spices. Careful it can be very hot in some places!
