Nortwest of Sumatra, Sinabung volcano is located 60 kilometres away from Medan. It is 2,640-metre high and is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Sinabung volcano has been dormant for 400 years but since 2010 there were many eruptions. In 2013, local authorities had to evacuate 10,000 inhabitants because of Sinabung volcano’s eruption. In 2014, an eruption caused 16 casualties, 7 went missing after another eruption in 2016.
Near Berastagi, Sibayak volcano will amaze you. It is 2,181-metre high and its 900-metre large crater is very impressive. To hike to the summit you will need about 3 hours, it is quite an easy walk and available to everyone. You might see sulphur fumaroles rising from the ground, careful the smell is very peculiar can be quite strong. Once you’ve reached the top you can observe a fantastic panorama overlooking Berastagi. On you way back make a relaxing stop in natural hot springs.
Kerinci volcano is the highest point of Sumatra and the tallest volcano in Indonesia. It is 3,805 metre high. The trek to the summit is only available to confirmed and trained hikers as it takes two days to reach Kerinci volcano’s top. After a walk through the jungle, you reach the end of the hike for sunrise and enjoy breath-taking views: there are 7 peaks around, 15 alpine lakes such as Gunung Tujuh Lake, with an altitude of 1,996 metres it is the highest lake of South-east Asia.
Not to be confused with Merapi volcano in Java, Marapi volcano, also known as the mountain of fire, is the most active volcano in Sumatra. Located in the West of the island, near Bukittinggi town, Marapi volcano is 2,891 metres high. The hike to the top of this volcano is only available to trained hikers as the path is very steep and it takes around 5 hours to reach the summit. If you can make it to the top you will enjoy an amazing scenery.
In Pasumah, Southeast of the island, stands Dempo volcano. This 3,173 metre-high-volcano is covered by tea plantations. At the top of the mountain is a 400-metre-large lake. The recent eruptions caused ash fall deposit which makes the hike quite difficult. You will need about 9 hours to reach the top of Dempo volcano.
