In Sumatra you will see the most diverse and lush rainforest in the world. More than 200 mammal species and 550 bird species live there. Tigers, rhinos, orang-utans and elephants are the most iconic animals in Sumatra.
Orang-utan means men of the forest in Indonesian. These great apes can be up to 1m40 tall and weight 80 kilos. You can observe them in Gunung Leuser National Park, a protected natural site you can explore by foot for the day or even plan for a trek with overnight in a tent. The resemblance of orang-utans to humans is striking, thei eyes, fingers and body expressions are incredibly similar to ours. An encounter with an orang-utan is a once in a lifetime experience!
Another animal in Sumatra is the elephant. Pachyderms are part of a subspecies of Asian elephants called the pygmy. They can be seen in their natural habitat in Kambas National Park or Tangkahan jungle where locals are protecting the elephants from poachers.
During treks in Sumatra you might observe many apes species. The tarsier for example is a bit difficult to spot because they are only fifteen centimetres high but with their big eyes and long feet they are very recognizable.
There are many other amazing animals in Sumatra such as tigers and rhinos for instance. Unfortunately, deforestation in favour of palm oil plantations, poaching and urbanization are threatening the life of endemic species. Only a few years ago it was still possible to observe tigers. Only a hundred rhinos are still alive in Sumatra, a sanctuary has been created to prevent their extinction.
