The Indonesian archipelago is located on the Pacific ring of fire and there are 150 active volcanoes out of 500 in the country. Lots of travellers come to Bali to enjoy the beach, experience Balinese culture, scuba dive or take a stroll by the paddy fields but there are also beautiful volcanoes in Bali. Some hikes are a bit difficult but others are available to everyone including children.
There are 4 volcanoes in Bali. Mount Agung and Mount Batur are the most visited because you can enjoy stunning sunrise from the top. Mount Bratan and Mount Merbuk aren’t as nice because they are quite difficult to access and once you’ve reached the top the view isn’t as nice as it is from Mount Agung and Mount Batur.
Located northeast of the island, Mount Batur is the most visited volcano in Bali. The summit is 1,717 metres above sea level. The walk to the top is available to everyone, including children from 10 years old, which means it can get busy during high season.
The hike takes 1 ½ to 2 hours and is composed of 2 different parts. The first part is an easy walk through the jungle to get closer to the volcano, the second part is a hike to the top. The path is steeper in the latter and the sand makes it more difficult to walk. The path is clear but it is mandatory to go with a local guide. This rule creates job in the area and makes it easier to restrict the number of travellers.
Usually the walk starts in the middle of the night so you can enjoy the sunrise from the top and admire the view on Batur Lake and Mount Agung. If the sky is clear, you can even see Mount Rinjani in Lombok. You can book an accommodation in Ubud –about 1 hour away from the volcno- or close by the start of the hike. We recommend you spend the night in Ubud as there is more choice and the hotels usually are cheaper and of better quality.
Mount Agung, in the island’s Far East, is the highest summit in Bali. It is 3,142-metre high and is a sacred mountain for Balinese people. You can see Mount Agung from many places in Bali but the best spot is from Amed especially at sunset.
Unlike Mount Batur, the hike to Mount Agung is only available to athletic travellers. The climb will happen at night, the path is very steep and it takes about 4 hours to reach the end. Since 2018, one can’t access the top of the volcano for safety reasons. Every once in a while, Agung volcano erupts smoke.
Climbing a volcano is a must-do activity in Bali. You will be walking during the night and sweating so you might get a bit cold. To make sure you fully enjoy the experience don’t forget to pack warm clothes and snacks to eat admiring the sunrise. And after this unique moment why don’t you treat yourself with a traditional Balinese massage?
