Java is a volcanic island. There are more than 38 mountains forming a line from East to West of Java. The highest point in Java is Semeru, 3,676 metres above sea level; the most active volcano is Merapi, 2,930 metres above sea level.
The geography of Java consists of mountains and highlands. Thanks to the fertile soil of the island, paddy fields in Java are very productive. The island was also the first one in Indonesia where coffee was grown in 1699. Today, coffee is grown in large plantations in Ijen area.
Talking about the geography of Java, we should mention its surface area: 150 000 km², the island is 1,000 kilometre long and 210 kilometres large. The longest river of Java, Solo River, stretches on 600 kilometres. It originates from Lawu volcano and flows North and East until Surabaya city.
Temperature varies between 22°C and 29°C, humidity of the air is 75%. The northern plains are usually warmer with an average temperature of 34°C during dry season. The South coast and central highlands are cooler. The rainy season starts in November and in April, the rainiest months of the year are January and February. It usually starts raining in the afternoon, mainly in East Java and the highlands.
